I hope Holland puts a shellacking on Uruguay in the semi-finals

Okay so I get that rules are rules. Strange things happen in sports all the time. It's one thing that makes them fun to play and to watch.

However, after listening to Luis Suarez's post game interviews, I'm hoping his team goes down.

Perhaps he should have kept his mouth shut and let people think it was just instinct that made him touch that ball.

No, he keeps running his mouth and it's as if he's proud of cheating. Really? Talk about poor sportsmanship. He's not hero but a freaking cheater. The goal was in. He was standing behind the goal line. Is he a goalie? No, so he should have keep his damn hands off the ball.

Now he's acting like getting a red card is as bad as being eliminated from the tournament? Is he serious?

I have to say that I'm an ''every four years'' soccer/football fan, and living in England really put me off the sport (the fans and players are nothing but drama). I do have to say, though, that I have been surprised in both good and bad ways by the players during the tournament. Luis Suarez's comments definitely sound ridiculous.

Enjoying your blog as a fellow North American ex-pat (Canadian) living in Europe as well.

Ragazza,
I'm just catching up on your blog and I'm so excited/happy for you regarding JTB. You rock. Okay, I've also just read like the last 100 entries and have too much to say except you continue to be the coolest chick I (don't really) know. Wish I could drop by Rome and have coffee with you and shoot the shit about the writing life.

Totally agree. That was just beyond uncool -- not only when it happened, but also now that he can't shut up. Forza Olanda!

I'm going to hide behind the couch over here while I support Uruguay... ;-) It's just that I'm bound to Uruguay due to my "marriage" to Argentina and to Tango (tango is a UNESCO world heritage of Argentina and Uruguay)... so... sowwwwyyyyy! With Argentina out, they are my only hope! Please still like me :-)

Though Suarez or not, I have a feeling they don't have much chance against Holland anyway...

I'm more curious and excited about the Germany/Spain match. It's going to be stressful!

ok back to hiding...

Ditto! The cheating is outrageous and I can't understand how it's something they can be so proud of.

(Comes out slightly grumpily from behind the couch...)
Oh he's not even playing in today's game anyway, so let's just relax. (Ironic that he plays for a Dutch team though, no?)

Uruguay in general has a great team and there is no need to pin the label "cheater" on the whole team. The one (ONE) who touched the ball is off the field, so let's just enjoy today's match in good spirits.

They're going to be without a lot of players they generally depend on so I think it will be very interesting. Thank goodness for Diego Forlan! I still think Holland has a better chance but I'm supporting my Uruguayans...

Cultural comment: having lived in that part of South America, I have to say that his comments remind me of an Argentine ex-boyfriend (seriously - rolling my eyes as I remember the ex saying very similar things). The ego of the Rio de la Plata (the river that joins Argentina and Uruguay) is very entertaining sometimes. To get the humor of his comments (which I do not necessarily condone), you have to have lived there and know the culture.

Hope no Argentines or Uruguays are reading this comment :-/

Go Holland. I've always had a soft spot for the Dutch given our background, and they gave me Karakter beach bar, so for that alone I have to root for them. :)

Michelle - Grazie...look forward to checking out your blog. Nice profile pic. I'm a big Garance fan.

Lori - I'm sitting here blushing. Thanks for the kind words! Maybe one day we'll be in NYC, Spain or somewhere else at the same time and can get coffee then. Good luck with your upcoming book tour.

gil - ha. I do love my Heineken.

kataroma - ciao...I'm not surprised you're rooting for the mighty Orange.

Michelle @BE - hello, that's what I'm saying.

Tina - cara, there's no need to hide. We still like you. :)
You do bring up a good point. The coach and the PR rep for the team need to school Mr. Suarez. He might not be media savvy. Regarding the cultural component, I get what you're saying. My people are known to be quite, let's say, boastful (especially Trinidadians and Jamaicans...ha) as well.

shannon - I get that there is some trash talking in sports but after the way Ghana lost, in South Africa, the PR rep could have reminded folks they were speaking to an international crowd. Looking forward to the next two game. Should be good.

gibber - I wish I could watch the game at that bar today. It's blazing hot here.
