What's playing in Rome...Estelle feat. Kanye West

I hear this song everywhere and it's one of the top videos on MTV Italia.

I never heard of this singer until I moved here. She is London born, mom is African, dad is West Indian. The single is number one in the UK and she recently to moved to NYC.

I just love the melody. It reminds me of Swing out Sister, very British 80s pop vibe. I like her choice of models in her video. ha.

Also popular is Duffy's"Mercy" and the new Madonna/Justin Timberlake song. I went to buy gelato the other day and the women behind the counter was dancing to the latter. I have a feeling it is going to be a big club hit.

I plan to stay in tonight. I went to dinner at 10:30 (hello, that is the time I'm usually in bed). I met G and C at G's girlfriend's for an aperitivo. At some point some said let's go to dinner. Since I had not eaten since 1:00 I was starving. We went to a place nearby in Monti. Good food but the vibe was weird. We thought it was a little stuffy. Can't remember the name. I got into an arguement with G about the movie JUNO.

I work at up at six and got a lot of work done (needed to get onlint to do some research for the script). G thinks I'm weird waking up so early.

Here is the video. Ignore the the red arrow.

Nice song and vid. Hadn't heard it prior to this though. Get used to dinner that late, especially now that the warm weather is nearing...I know what you mean by being in bed by that time. I was the same way when we first moved here, but it's one of those things that you just HAVE to get used to! You'll wind up liking it, I believe. There is nothing more relaxing than to have dinner outdoors on a moonlight night during the summer! :) You'll see.

Ugh, girl. I can't handle dinner that late, either! I get mooooody!! :-)

I like the song. Will be a good one for the summer. I can see myself driving with the windows down pumping that. :)

I don't think I could swing eating dinner that late either, so I feel you on that. When I was in Rome last year on holiday, that was the only thing I had trouble adjusting to. What was the basis of the Juno argument? I really liked that movie.:)

giulia - I am trying to get used to it. ha! You are right there is nothing nicer than a having dinner outside with good frends.

cherrye - I think I need to eat more during lunch. that would help.

sherry - It is a fun song. I can't get it out of my head

We were arguing about whether the Juno hype or the backlash was justified.

lilacspecs - I JUST saw that "Big Girls" video. Who is this Mika guy? I saw some press on him in the states but I don't know much about him.

It all sounds sooo amazing! Don't you just wake up every morning and freakin' pinch yourself?

Love the Estelle song. I read somewhere that her record company is pressuring her to change her appearance and become more beweavable. So sad that she can't just be a singer with an amazing voice. Duffy's alright but I hate the Madonna/JT song. It annoyed me the first time I heard it.

I love that song - it's a perfect pairing for our new-found spring! I hope we'll be hearing lots more from her.

erin - I won't have a TV in my new place so my MTV Italia days will be coming to an end for a while.

los angelista - ha! yes. Okay that is not cool re: Estelle. Let the woman do her thing. Not everyone has to look the same!

jen - I hope so too.

I don't like dinner that late either. I too get moody and have usually snacked so much that I'm no longer hungry by that time.

Love youb blog. I work in the music industry and yes, they are trying to make Estelle change her hair and fix her teeth. Please, the girl can sing. I'm actually going to her concert here in NYC on the 28th. Keep having fun in Italy!

at first i didn't think anything about estelle, but i heard her music loud in the office one day, i started to like it. she sounds like ms. dynamite a little bit on her reggae stuff. but this song is so refreshing and catchy, in a good way. good luck on writing and researching the script. you'll be fine and you'll find a job.

delina - believe me, I understand.

beautyfashionlife - thanks for stopping by! That is crazy Estelle looks fine as she is. I like her haircut. She doesn't need a weave down to her ass. Hope you have fun at the concert.

bigcnyc - thanks C. Yes Estelle does sound a little like Ms. Dynamite. (What ever happened to her?).

I finally found you again!

When you were in Toronto in Sept.
I came across your blog from a comment on Afrobella.com and I related to it. (that's how I feel when I straighten my hair). Plus I live in T.O. and wanted to hear your adventures....then I went away and forgot how I ended up on your page.

fast forward to Tonight (7mths later)I'm doing a search for dominican salons in Toronto (for my yearly blowout)and I come across your comment again on Afrobella. and I only recognize it's u because I had to look up 'Ragazza' the first time I seen it. lol

Anyways, I can see that you post regular so I have a lot of catching up to do. lol

jill - thank you!

claudia - really would it kill the industry to have one singer be original?

Ms. G - welcome back! Hope things are going well in T.O.

"...her record company is pressuring her to change her appearance and become more beweavable..."

Beweavable! LOL! I read that too. They think she needs to change her hair and teeth to make it big in the US. !!!!!

Has everyone in that business gone quite mad? What's with this rage for generic plastic? I love her look!

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

wordtryst - okay I could maybe understand the teeth thing but I still don't understand her U.S. label's concern about her hair. The cut is cute and fits her face.

Just got the Estelle CD from my friends at Atlantic Records. Her album is definitely the bomb!! Very heavy on the reggae influences. Great album. I work in the music industry and haven't been this interested in a new artist in a LONG TIME.

beautyfashionlife - I'm looking forward to the CD as well. Can't wait.
