Brett Ratner to direct Beverly Hills Cop 4? It's official. Hollywood has run out of ideas.

Why are we doing all these sequels and remaking movies from the 80s!! I get that someone born after 1980 might not know that the remake of FAME is remake but come on. RAMBO, INDY 4, etc. enough already. I loved the original FAME. Leave it alone. ha

Then today my friend sent me the following article from Variety:

Eddie Murphy back in 'Beverly Hills'
Brett Ratner negotiating to direct 4th 'Cop' film
By MICHAEL FLEMING

On the heels of the successful revival of the "Indiana
Jones" franchise, Paramount has set in motion a fourth
installment of "Beverly Hills Cop."
Eddie Murphy is attached to reprise his role as
Detroit detective Axel Foley, and Brett Ratner is
negotiating to direct.

Studio is aiming for a 2009 production start and a
summer 2010 release.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce. Jerry
Bruckheimer, who produced the original "Beverly Hills
Cop" trilogy with late partner Don Simpson, won't be
actively involved in the new film.

Murphy approached the studio about reviving the
franchise that cemented his status as a B.O.
mega-star. Par brass were eager to land another
picture with Murphy after he finished the Karey
Kirkpatrick-directed "NowhereLand," which Paramount
releases in June 2009.

That film was also produced by Di Bonaventura, who is
working on the summer 2009 releases "G.I. Joe" and
"Transformers 2."

The studio canvassed a number of directors before
choosing Ratner. A writer will be hired shortly.

Released in 1984, the original "Beverly Hills Cop"
grossed $316 million worldwide and spawned two
sequels. All told, the three pics grossed $712.9
million worldwide. The last was released in 1994.

Murphy is currently toplining the Brian
Robbins-directed "A Thousand Words" for DreamWorks.

Ratner has been developing the Hugh Hefner biopic
"Playboy" for Universal and Imagine.

They're remaking Fame???? Sorry, sorry not what that article was about, but, they're remaking fame?
I can (sort of) understand some remakes but come on. Fame? It is iconic of so many things, not least of all the era is was produced in. ok, sorry, I'll stop now.

When I was in Brooklyn they were filming a remake of "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" (with Denzel W.)...
The original was a kick-ass film, so I'm not sure what the remake will offer. My question is: When something's good, why bother remaking it?

joanne - ha . I understand completely!

romerican - $$$ is the reason. It's easier to take a chance on something that was successful before that an new idea. sad.

I dont hink this film will be a must see.Im sure theres a secret vault with tons of really good unread scripts somewhere just waiting for a shot. And the semi talented get richer and richer.

I am so sick of the baby boomer idiocy. It's so time to step out of the way and let the younger generation put their real stamp on things (in addition to talented Roman-American/nyc/Caribbean Ragazzas, who I'm sure are producing WAY better scripts!)

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. It seems like just about every movie that's coming out is a remake, a book, or a redundant sequel. What happened to the original screenplay?!

glamah16 - I wonder what the plot will be?

jen - ha. you are very kind. Actually boomer writers are too old for Hollywood, some 23 USC film school grad will probably get the gig.

lulu - it's sad. Most execs do not want to take a chance on something that doesn't have a known marketing hook.

I agree in general, that most remakes SUCK and shouldn't be made. However...I have to say...i LOVED tranformers. If any cartoon should be made into a live action movie, it was that one. And I loved that they kept it cheesy with some of the lines, it didn't take itself to seriously, they said things like "roll out" and "fall back" AND they made the sound that they make on the cartoon when they transform. OK, does all that make me a nerd? Maybe. point is, Transformers was a good remake. Could care less about the actors (tho that shia is cute), it was all about the cars and their personalities. OK, i'm of to my nerd convention. :)

gibber - I don't even know what to say. You remember the sound the cars made? I guess you will be there opening night of TRANSFORMERS 2 no?

i generally don't watch hollywood movies so the fact that they're remaking "beverly hills cop" doesn't really bother me. actually it does bother because i'm sure that there are very talented and eager young filmmakers with some brilliant stories that are waiting to be told. and these are stories that i would like to see (and others included).

since people are turning towards the interweb, i'm sure there are a bunch independent films out there. maybe they're on youtube. people spend days on end watching that thing. hopefully hollywood will catch up.

just please hollywood, don't bring "tomb raider" back to the screen. those were not tears of joy i shed.

I just told my husband this and he made the funniest face, sort of like he was going to vomit, and then he sat down on the couch and said, "That is sick. That's when you know Eddie Murphy can't be totally all there in the head. Nobody's going to see that. I don't know anybody that wants to see that. Incredible."

And some of these studios wonder why they're losing money... duh!

Yes, and I can sing you the theme song if you'd like. Hells yeah I'll be at the sequal! I love me some optimus prime!

ninety9 - I think you are safe from another Tomb Raider. ha. I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to make Grand Theft Auto into a feature film.

los angelista - Maybe Jonny Gill will have a cameo in this version. I just don't see Eddie in this role again.

gibber - Optimous prime.
I haven't seen Iron Man yet but no you are not crazy RD jr. is looking very nice these days. Another blogger put up the photo of him in Tropic Thunder. Someone commented that Robert was good looking as a brother and she'd do him. hahaha
