NYC's Magnolia Bakery has opened a bakery in L.A.

Back home in Rome.

My trip to L.A. (my first to the States since moving aboard) was very productive. I will write later about the whole "you need to move back for your career" advice I received.

I feel like I gained at least half the weight I lost. I went a little bananas with the junk food.

My former co-workers took me to lunch at the amazing sushi restaurant, Izaka-ya by Katsu-ya, on 3rd street. George Clooney's girl friend Elisabetta Canalis was at the table next to us. She's stunning in person. As is Kelly Osborne who was with her mother and brother at the table behind us. Has Kelly spoken about her weight loss? It seems like she's everywhere lately.

After lunch we walked up the corner to Magnolia Bakery. The bakery was one of my favorite places in NYC. This branch opened a few months ago in a former dry cleaning store.

If I still lived in L.A. I would probably eat a cupcake, a slice of cake or the banana pudding everyday as it's walk distance from my old apartment. Delicious.

It smelled so good in there.

CAKE!!

I really like the decor. This shade of blue is very pretty.

I went to Magnolia in NYC and I was really disappointed - the cupcakes were really really dry, and I spoke to some other friends who went different days and had the same experience. Not sure what their process is now, but it wasn't what I was expecting :( Hopefully your experience was better!

I wonder if post SATC they fell off? The cupcake in L.A. was moist with delicious frosting.

Dry cupcakes are unacceptable!!

In my dreams I have a large bathroom that is white and that color blue. With a huge multiple head shower. And a large jacuzzi tub.

gibber - In my dreams there are many things I would like in that color.

I have to second what Sara says. I was pretty unimpressed with Magnolia-- am more of a Wonderland and Buttercup girl.

However, i did enjoy the frosting on Magnolia's Red Velvet.

moi - Buttercup! I have the Buttercup Bake Shop cookbook. It's amazing. Jennifer Appel co-founded Magnolia before opening Buttercup.

I haven't been back to NYC in years and not to the bakery for a while. Sorry to hear it's not what it used to be. The cupcakes in L.A. were good though.

Danger! I live south of Hollywood and that place must be a couple miles (if that) from me! Did you say banana pudding??!! Oh my. Thanks for the tip ... I might be in trouble!

cv - yes, banana pudding. I made it once using the recipe from the Buttercup Bakery Cookbook. So delicious!

I went to Magnolia back in the day just after it appeared on SATC (native NYer here) and I didn't like them back then they were too...eggy...if that makes sense. Either way, yes, Magnolia NYC is totally overrated, and I'm of the opinion that people only still line up to go for the same reason everyone will be lined up to see Sex and the City, the movie, part 19-- nostalgia. There are so many places in NYC to get better cupcakes. Cupcakes and Burgers on 36th, I think, and 8th is one. Very not gourmet. Very tasty.

Now where I can't find a good cucake to save my life? Barcelona. Geez.

ieishah - I was actually angry after seeing SATC 2. I assume there will not be a number 3.

I know what you mean about baked goods being too eggy. It's a big turnoff.

Good luck on the Cupcake search. There are few places in Rome who make them.
