Flashback Friday – All About Eve

Okay enough with the “woe is me” posts. ha

Continuing with this month's film flashbacks, today it's All About Eve.

Yes there was a time when Hollywood made movies about women who were complex, acted like grown ups and looked somewhat around their age.

This movie is one of my favorites. The dialogue is fantastic. I wish I had the opportunity to say to someone, “you’re too short for that gesture.” Since I’m short myself, it wouldn’t be verticalism on my part.

Bette Davis brought it! George Sanders as theatre critic Addison De Witt was priceless.

This was Marilyn Monroe's first movie and even in tiny part she stood out. All About Eve won six Oscars including Best Screenplay and Best Picture. It was released in 1950.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

The scene with one of the most famous line in cinema, "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night".

Bette is at her snarky best in this scene.

Marilyn Monroe just glowed in that film. I also love the movie 'Auntie Mame' with Rosalind Russell. Ah, the time when women where called "broads" and everything was "swell"
I had a big crush on Jimmy Stewart too.
I was born too late...

Don't worry Violetta - I have a mad crush on old Jimmy too.

I got to rent this! I love the lady who plays the maid - she always was the best foil to any actor.

I've never seen that movie but I'd love to now. Could you imagine a film like that being made now? The only actors who would be able to pull it off would be Cate Blanchett or Annette Bening. Ah, long live old Hollywood!

One of the best films ever!

Thelma Ritter, Skywalker, and she was brilliant in everything.

This is one of my all time fav films. What happened to writing like that? The themes are so surprisingly modern and smart. It is if films have been dumbed down since then....

I think this is going to have to be added to my queue, too. Too many wonderful films!

This is one of my all time faves too! Forget Joan Crawford, Bette was the queen of strong women's roles. Movies and roles like this disappeared when Hollywood started demanding that women actors look like boney, blonde, tarts. Bette was never a beauty and she got to play a range of roles because of it. You're hard-pressed to find a leading contemporary actress who doesn't have that Hollywood look and the roles show exactly the same amout of depth as that look does.

Ms. Violetta - she really did.

Skywalker - I was more of a Cary Grant fan. But Jimmy was very talented. Thelma Ritter is the name of the actress who plays the maid.

milanese - Cate or Annette could pull it off. It probably wouldn't get made today because it's too "talky".

SDG - Yes it is.

anna - the blockbuster mentality took over. After Jaws things were never the same.

jen - good choice. enjoy.

fly girl - Yes an actress with Bette's looks today would be a character actress not a movie star or leading actress like Bette was. Don't sleep on Joan Crawford, she was incredible in Mildred Pierce.

Yes, Joan ruled in Mildred Pierce but if you put their career roles side by side, Bette was the better actor by far. Of course, Joan was more of a beauty so maybe she didn't feel she had to work it like Bette did.

fly girl - it's funny I never think of Joan as a beauty ala Ava Gardner but I do agree Bette is the better actress. And she did work it.
