A beach next to a runway?

Today my sister is leaving for St. Martin to meet up with my brother, my sister-in-law and my two little nephews. My parents will be meeting their latest grandchild for the first time.

My dad has no idea my sister is coming. I wish I could be there to see the look on his face.

There is a bar on the Dutch side we like to go to and watch the planes fly over the beach. When you see one of the big American Airlines, KLM or Air France planes fly over you have to wonder why anyone would "relax" on that beach.

Planes do come in quite low but this is bananas.

HOLY SH*T! Is the runway that short that the planes have to land like that??? I honestly would have freaked the hell out if I were there when that plane was landing!

looks as if
the plane's wheels
are touching the top of the fence!

no way
i could stretch out there for a suntan!

:-)

on my beach
we have to watch out for low flying
sea gulls
who have just eaten,
if you know what i mean...

chris & erin - No that plane is def. lower than usual. There is another video of people laying on the beach getting pushed into the water from the gusts of a plane readying for take off. There are signs everywhere telling people to use caution, when cross the street due to the planes.

There is hardly any sand at that beach so again, I don't why one would sun bathe there. LOL

giulia - the runway in St. Barths is much shorter (and was one of the scariest landings I have ever experienced) and I don't think the planes get that low. I don't know if this runway is super short or what. I do know I would not stand there and take photos. :)

It is a very cool sight though sitting at the bar and watching the planes come in over the sea. Very intense but cool at the same time.

calabrisella - grazie, anch'io.

somepinkflowers - yes it does..could you imagine being in the car? I assume (hope) the plane only looked like it was going to hit the car or the fence.

thanks for stopping by.

Seen this kind of thing before - the airport on Tobago, for example. The planes come in very low over the sea and the strip begins immediately. It always seems to me that they barely clear the fence. People stay clear, however.

Was driving on a causeway off downtown Miami once and a plane came in so low over the road that I was damned scared. Especially as this was post 911.

Ugh.

So Funny!!!

I published the same post two days ago and I 've almost used this video but chose another one.
We're going back to live in SxM this coming fall. SxM means to me what Italy means to you. I have it under my skin.

sissi - you are? which side of the island...the French side? I love SXM but I can't live there yet. Too many relatives asking me why I'm still single.

wordtryst - for reason on that beach in SXM people actually stand there and take photos. Standing at the bar yards away, the sound from the plane could make you deaf. I can't imagine what standing right under it would sound like.

Yes , we should head back there during the fall if everything goes as planned.
I have always lived on the dutch side but with the info I have gathered so far it seems that the french side is cheaper ( as far as rentals go) , quieter ( and safer?). Are you from SxM ? Do you speak french ?

sissi - yes the French side overall is much quieter. It's less developed and crowded. The Dutch side is smaller but has a larger population.

I do have a French passport but was born in New York City. Both parents are from SXM. I took 7 years of French (jr. high/high school and one year in college). I remember maybe two sentences. Je suis fatigue and je m'appelle Arlène. My mom speaks French and English, Dad is multi-lingual.

Good luck with your move. My parent's (they currently live on the French side) neighbor is from France. It's a beautiful island.
