Flashback Friday - Cabbage Kids

Last week Rufus and Chaka Khan told us something good. This week as I was unpacking (still!!) I looked through an old photo album and saw a photo of my sister when she was around seven holding her beloved Cabbage Patch doll. She won the doll during a church raffle and she took that darn thing with her everywhere.

I remember when these dolls first burst on the scene in 1983. All hell broke loose. People were going nuts trying to track them down for the holidays. I didn't get it. I thought the dolls were so ugly but then I met my sister's doll and I understood.

Of course in the 80s there was also a dance called the Cabbage Patch. Whenever I heard old school hip-hop I want to bust out the moves.

I don't own a scanner so no photo of little sis but I did find this commercial. Ha. Have a great weekend.

I remember the dolls as I was an exchange student in the States the year they were born. I believe their pictures linger about my yearbook... The commercial is funny in a very sad way!

I was a teenager but my sisters were still young enough to want them. We had an aunt that worked for a major department store and got a bunch of them for several youngsters in the family. I never did get and I think my sister still has hers.

Oh sis, but you forgot that in 4th grade i was in the "Cabbage Patch Kids Play." I played Lavender McDade, the villain who wanted to kidnapp those pesky kids. If I could download audio, I could sing a few bars for you, but here you go:

"Cabbage patch kids, growing in the garden. Cabbage patch kids, growing in the sun. And the most amazing thing about a cabbage patch KIIID! is that each one grows to be a special one."

I could go on:

"Cabbages, cabbages, yum yum yum. Cabbages, cabbages, GIMME SOME! Cabbages for breakfast, cabbages for lunch. Cabbages ALLL THE TIME, munch munch, munch!"

I'll stop now.

beatriz - The first time I saw that commercial I thought it was so bizarre.

gibber - I really don't know what to say. Seriously I don't.

The Geico creative team really rocks - they actually make commercials worth watching.

Gibber - that cracked me up!

I never did quite get the Cabbage Patch frenzy, but again... that was AFTER my time!

What l put my parents through for that cabbage patch kid!! I have a confession, l still have the cabbage patch kid now its my little niece's friend when she is over at my place.

My mum once came back with a fake (while l was waiting for one), l was only little and l pulled down it's pants turn it around and screamed "mum it's a FAKE!". It didnt have the signature on it's bottom..lol

It was good training l can still spot a fake (anything)a mile away:)

I had two Cabbage Patch Kids. My first one had blond yarn hair and blue eyes her name was Diana. My second one had brown corn-silk hair and brown eyes and I named her Samantha.

That Geico commercial is both weird and clever at the same time. They have a great advertising team.

Oh my goodness, this is SUCH a flashback! My mom would never buy me one even though I begged and begged! I think I was the only child around for miles who didn't have a Cabbage Patch Kids doll! She told me I was too old for one and she wasn't paying all that money for an ugly doll!

BTW, thanks for the shout out on Afrobella! I was just reading through all the comments and just saw yours. So sweet of you to say!

gibber- that is the funniest song ever.

I remember how happy I was to get my first cabbage patch doll. I loved the chubby cheeks. Then my older bro made the connection that my doll and I looked a bit too much alike when we smiled and teased me relentlessly. To this day he calls me CP...grr.

As far as the ad goes...I'd take the gecko commercials over these new ones b/c something about a talking animal just makes me laugh!

I remember the cabbage patch craze too well, I was working in Kmart at for the Christmas season at the time and saw adults fighting over those ugly dolls. Why? I didn't know then and I still don't.

confessions - ha....that is good training.

lulu - I'm very impressed you still remember their names. That is love.

glamah16 - true. I wonder if there is a Cabbbage Patch video game now.

los angelista - you're welcome! My mom thought the dolls were weird look as well.

k.c. - brothers can be so mean sometimes right? ha. I like the gecko one because of his accent. Crack me up every time.

j. doe - who knows how a toy becomes the "it" gift one season? Remember the Tickle Me Elmo shortage one year?
