Therapy and Journey

"You need a therapist!"

This is what a friend said to me earlier tonight. I just got in from drinks at the wonderful Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. My friend who has known me for almost 20 years, is in L.A. for business. She was staying at the hotel and it was easier to meet there.

I haven't been there since my dinner with Clive. I forget how trippy it can be. I saw Al Sharpton. WTF? My friend is married with kids and lives in the NYC suburbs. She finds Los Angeles very interesting, like a science experiment.

She works on the corporate side of a big entertainment company but wants to move over to the creative side. After listening to me rant about the business, she said I needed to see a professional.

Okay stress about the movie aside, I am thankful I work with some very talented (and stable people). I have to keep reminding myself why I came out here in the first place. I need to keep believing.

Which brings me to today's musical selection. Not only was it the song Tony picked during the Sopranos finale, but it was on Scrubs, Family Guy, one of those MTV reality shows, the movie Monster, etc. This video cracks me up. Steve Perry's pants are so tight. One thing that is serious though, is his voice. This is live, no backing vocals or lip synching, like some so-called singers.

I don't know if I really need therapy. I might be one of only four people in Hollywood not seeing a therapist. I do know songs like this lift my spirits. This song is so Jersey. I love it.

T.K. in Ohio: Ahh, Steve Perry & that voice... & those pants. My ex-hubby used to actually be jealous of Steve's pants & 'alleged' that Steve used to stuff them w/a sock. (LOL!) He was such a hater... :-)

Yeah, I want a therapist too. I love the idea of paying someone to listen to me rather than having to have a conversation (yawn!)

It's funny how glamourous things which a lot of people think are really great actually turn out to have a big down side, isn't it? I'm sure many people would give their eye teeth for your job. I find the same when I tell people back home that I live in Italy - they all have this "Under the Tuscan Sun" image and think my life must be so wonderful -they have no idea about all the problems here.

ummm...was I COMPLETELY on vacation or something when you wrote about your dinner with Clive in March?!?!?! I know it's a little delayed but "eeeeeee!" (with a big smile and tight fists waving in a girly way).

giulia - Sometimes I feel there is a problem because I don't have one. People here are shocked "You don't have a therapist? What is wrong with you? :)

t.k. - how dare your ex should say a thing! Hater indeed.

kataroma - wait, you mean you're not hanging out with Raoul Bova in Positano and wondering which tiles to put in your Tuscan villa? :)

It was interesting to talk to my friend last night. She works in NYC so while she may work in entertainment she also has a life. I do love my job, I'm just tired of living to work instead of working to live. I need to move out of this environment in order to do so.

chris & erin - I would say the dinner with Mr. Owen falls under the glamourous part of the business. I could listen to him read the phone book.

I had a HUGE crush on steve perry when i was a kid- he's kind of foxy in a cheesy 80s way!
gotta love that song though, it rocks.

I'm all about therapy. At least once. I did a little in college (ok, it was psych phd candidates, but that counts!). Sometimes I need a little perspective from a truly neutral source, and that can't come from people who know you. They can't be neutral no matter how hard they try. They know what's up.

So, I have a problem with America's obsession with therapy and paxil, but I don;t think there's anything wrong with trying to get some perspective sometimes.

Funny that she just came out and said it. This is your friend who's house we went to at xmas right? i can totally see her saying that :)

romerican - something cheesy can be a good thing. ha.

gibber - I agree there is nothing wrong with some perspective but I don't get having one for your entire adult life. I thought the goal of therapy was to get better.

Love Journey.

Anon, I admit, I too have romantic "Tuscan Sun" images of Italy. I also used to have fuzzy glitzy impressions of LA, until my friend visited there to attend a screenwriting conference and came back hating the place. Then I started reading Eric Jerome Dickey and Michael Connelly and got a more realistic outlook.

As for the therapy... a student earlier this year told me (laughingly) that he's an emotional wreck. I told him that we all are. Some of us just hide it better.

Nyc, you had dinner with Clive Owen? YOU HAD DINNER WITH...? Now I have to go back and click that link...

wordtyrst - yes it's true I had dinner with C.O.

Believe me L.A. is a trip. If I didn't live here I would find the whole scene amusing.

I don't know about the therapist thing, but I love Journey! To this day, any time I hear one of their songs, it reminds me of my high school boyfriend...he listened to them all the time.

That's a smile producing song without a doubt.

kathy - I love them too. I don't care if their clothes were cheesy. It was the '80s after all.

j. doe - you lived in Jersey? Where?

rose - yes it is! Watching the Sopranos finale and hearing that song brought back so many memories.
