Flashback Friday - Nat King Cole "The Christmas Song"

Sappy Level - medium to high.

This along with "O Holy Night" is one of my dad's favorites. Mel Torme co-wrote this classic. I love Nat King Cole's voice. So beautiful.

There is a big religious holiday here on Monday. It's very interesting to spend the holiday season in a place where shopping takes a back seat. It's really a shock to my American system but I'm adjusting. Being broke helps. Ha.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Nothing's better than him singing that song to put you in the GOOD Christmas mood!!

It's true . . .when you're in a place where every public space is not blaring Christmas tunes, you enjoy the ones you hear MUCH more.

Have a great weekend.

I've been listening to a different version this year, but there is nothing like Nat King Cole's gorgeous voice. This may be the all time Christmas classic, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm even bummed that I don't like chestnuts, JUST because of this song.

I love Nat King Cole - I should download it. I danced to "Unforgettable" for father daughter dance at my wedding this year.

I liked the low key version of all the holidays in Italy. No shopping rush to buy holiday decorations, gifts, dust collecting objects or whatever.

Thanks for that beautiful reminder of what Chrismas music used to feel like. I wish I too like you could be in a place where shopping takes a back seat to the reason for the season. Here in the US there is a crazy uproar over whether to say "Merry Chrismas" or "Happy Holidays". People get too caught up in buying "stuff". Maybe now that the economy is bad they will realize that they can live without so much "stuff" and focus on more meaningful thoughts at Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all.

joanne - I knew you would.

susan - I'm pretty sure my parents have played this song every Christmas of my life.

kimb - that is a good point. Back home we would starts to hear Christmas songs in late October. When I worked in retailing I started to turn into the Grinch between hearing the same songs over and over (bad carols at that) and dealing obnoxious customers.

jen - I don't think I've ever had plain chestnuts. I've only eaten them as part of a dish. So I have not idea what chestnuts roasted an open fire taste like.

skywalker - what a pretty song to dance to.

j. doe - it is really different. Of course you know it's the holidays with the lights, mangers, and a few trees but stores are not opening earlier. There are a few holiday TV ads from the big international companies like McDonalds, Coke and Philips (electric shavers for dad!). That it. There are no sales. Those don't happen until February.

gypsygirl - I was reading an article in the New York Times where all these parents said they felt guilty they couldn't go all out for Christmas this year. I don't understand, when did it become mandatory for parents to spend more than they could afford so Johnny could have whatever he wanted? I think the whole P.C. uproar over Christmas is ridiculous. I'm not sure why anyone would get offend over darn Christmas tree. Calling it a "holiday tree" doesn't change the fact that's still a Christmas Tree. It not like you put them up during St. Patrick's Day.

carla - you're welcome...you too.

gibber - right now I have Mariah's playing. Don't be depressed pumpkin. xo

I've got to thank you . . . I don't have my Christmas CDs with me, and our budget right now doesn't allow for purchasing new ones. . .but after listening/watching your Nat King Cole on YouTube, I clicked on another, and another . . .and then realized I can have my Christmas carols just like that!! So I spent a morning working on Christmas cards and having some Christmas cheer. I did the classics - Bing Crosby and (tee hee) Johnny Mathis (whom I think is great).

So thanks for the inspiration and for filling my tiny apartment with the sounds of Christmas!
