Wait a minute, you can get washboard abs from plastic surgery?

I had no idea. I remember a few years ago there was a rumor that LLCool J and other men well known for their six-packs had work done. I assumed they meant some lipo.

Well I happened to see that lovely show "Dr. 90210". An up and coming rapper said he need help. He didn't like to take his shirt off during his concerts. He did work out but he had a three-pack instead of a six-pack. I didn't see what the big deal was but he was fixated on "his problem".

I can't remember the medical term but his plastic surgeon had also had the same procedure. When the doctor lifted up his shirt I was freaked out a little bit. He was maybe in his mid-40s but he had the LLCool J six-pack. It looked strange.

After the surgery the rapper had the abs he wanted.

I think people famous for their abs who have had this surgery should freaking come clean. There are men who spend hours in the gym trying to get the same shape and it will never happen without surgery. Also many times the abs are "sprayed" on. Britney used this make up technique a lot. Sometimes it wasn't applied well and you could tell.

It's great to be in shape. Most of the men I have dated were very athletic, either playing during school/college or as adults in tennis or soccer leagues. However if I met a guy who had this abs surgery I would be turned off. That is too vain and weird to me. It's as bad as the over Botoxed forehead that doesn't move.

LL is almost 50. (ooops I stand corrected I've been told he's only 41).

I'm not interested in wash board abs. Actually, I like guys with a little meat on them. Being real is more important and if a guy was THAT vain that he needed surgery to achieve that look he probably would make for a fairly self-absorbed lover.

I've watched a few shows where they "make-over" people. They slap on veneers, and do Lasik eye surgery - what I always wonder is the psychological after effects from all that change.

All I can say is that if there's surgery available that will make me look like LL Cool J--I want it.

And I'm not ashamed to admit it, either...

Agreed with Ms. Violetta that those who spend the time either in the gym or in surgery to attain this physique are probably a far too self-absorbed to be any fun!!

Wow that LL Cool J is almost 50. I guess we are all getting up there these days. marco turns 41 tomorrow (I can say that since I turned 39 a couple of weeks ago and am thus still a young chica in my 30s) . . . : )

Well here in Argentina the girls get booty implants. Girls here naturally have curvy derrieres, and girls who aren't as blessed from behind, if the they have money they get their butts by surgery! (Me, I just achieve it by eating a lot of flan).

About abs, my man has a tummy and I love it. I wouldn't want him to have washboard abs. Am I weird? :-)

I mean I guess it would be nice but we're foodies, we spend our evenings cooking and eating and drinking wine, so a washboard stomach is just not in the cards. We'd both take meat, wine and flan over washboard abs any day. We're swines in the herd of Epicurus. :-)

LL is just 41 (Jan 14). Damn, let the brother enjoy his 40's for a minute! And, he's had those abs for a while...

Wow, LL got some age on him.

Tina - no you are not weird. I heard about butt implants. I wonder if they are uncomfortable. I love food too. I'm glad to live in a country where folks like to eat. That whole no carbs, Zone diet, microbiotic, no sugar thing going on in Hollywood is nuts.

ms. wooden shoes - ha, fine i'll let the brother enjoy his 40s. Thanks for the correction. I thought he was in his late 40s. I get how he might have had those abs at 25 maybe 30 but now? Anyway I'm not one to gossip.

lilacspecs - while I was off by a few years I'm still surprised the man who sang "Mamma Said Knock You Out" is in his 40s.

katerina - grazie, I'll be over.

Aw come on Ragazza, a little "Manscaping" never hurt anyone. lol. Leave LL alone. That man is nowhere near 50. lol

Wow - that's just scary!

Tina - my aunt lived in China and apparently women there had the booty implants too as well as surgery to make their eyes look more "European". That kind of horrifies me partly because it's sad if non-white women feel that they must look 'white' to be beautiful. It must really really hurt- I wonder how long til you can sit down?

This so disturbs me. For me, the point of plastic surgery is for situations like a cleft/split lip or if someone had a bad accident and needs reconstruction. It's wonderful how much plastic surgery cna help certain people, but SO disturbing it's also used to make things like fake 6 packs.

Me, I like my mainly whole unprocessed foods, with some chocolate and pastry indulgences, and as much yoga as my schedule allows (which is not much but helps). I don't love watching my body age, but I try to take pride in what I can do.

SDG - I know, I know the Ladies Love Cool James. I actually like to see some manscaping but nothing too excessive.

kataroma - I don't get the booty implants at all. I read the eye lid procedure is the most popular plastic surgery there. It's weird how Dove in the US has that everyone is beautiful ad campaign while at the same time another division of the same company sells skin lightening creams in Asia, India and Africa.

city girl - I thought the point of plastic surgery was to make you look the best you could for your age..."freshen up." Instead too many people try to look decades younger. I wonder with the economic crisis if people will cut back on things like unneeded surgery.

Okay, so I'd never make it in Hollywood, but plastic surgery grosses me out in general.

It's one thing if there's a deformity and a small child has surgery to fix that, but the whole make my breasts smaller/bigger, tummy tighter, lips bigger... ugh.

I had no idea about the washboards.

Pretty darned gross.

My 2-cents:

This summer, I had plastic surgery here in Colombia: an abdomenoplasty (tummy tuck) and some associated lipo. When I graduated high school, I weighed 380 pounds. I lost 180 over about eight years, all through diet and exercise, but because fat cells only shrink (they don't disappear), I had some areas that I considered to be flabby and/or with excess skin. Most of my friends in the States were against me getting the surgery, saying I was fine as-is, yadda yadda. But in the end, it's all about how you feel, isn't it? I promise you, it's less about being vain and more about feeling comfortable enough with your body to do something as simple as take your shirt off at the beach. In fact, this Christmas in Brazil was my first time at the beach shirtless since I was 11 years old. I'm 31 now. And believe me, I was self-conscious the entire time, in spite of constant positive remarks about my physique. Hell, I put in many many years of work into my body...why not enjoy it?

Folks never know what's going on in your head or what demons you're struggling with. They chalk the desire to not feel embarrassed about your body up to vanity and egotism. You can work out and maintain a nicely-honed body in less than 90 minutes a day...hardly what I'd call "self-absorbed." It's an investment in self, to my way of thinking. When you look good, you feel good...who doesn't want a lover who looks good and feels good about himself?

Assumptions aren't good for anybody.

(Climbing off soap box now)

*sorry about the long post*

The whole topic of plastic surgery makes me a bit queasy. I wrote a piece a while ago that goes a bit deeper into all this- but to each his own....http://www.onelightmessenger.com/TheOnlyMakeover.pdf

erin - maybe if I had not lived in L.A. for all those years I wouldn't be so anti unneeded surgery. You do feel a lot of pressure to look a certain way.

jen - I agree.

fly brother - thanks for being honest. I was only talking about unnecessary surgery. I understand why after dropping so much weight you would need a tummy tuck. On the show the guy already had a fit stomach and muscles but he wanted a 6 pack not a 4 pack. I work in Hollywood and have friends who feel pressure to get Botox in their 20s and they are not even actresses. That pressure is what I have a problem with. I don't feel it here in Rome, which is ironic given the whole Bella Figura thing. My female friends here are gorgeous but look somewhat around their age. Not a single Italian friend nor expat is getting Botox. My friends range in age from late 20s to mid 50s.

I agree if you feel good you look good but disagree that only a certain aesthetic (big breasts, tiny waist, small nose, long hair) is the right one. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors.

wordtryst - I was really shocked. I had no idea until I saw the show.

Idara - Thanks. I'll check out the link.

Its all an illusion.I guess they have to what they have to do. I love my mans beer belly.I would be freaked out if it suddenly transformed.

glamah16 - I like how most of the men I see in Italy do not look plastic. It's a nice change.
