The Pioneer Woman show on Food Network

Can someone please explain this show to me?

I know Ree Drummond has a very popular blog. Reese Witherspoon is attached to a film about her.

I was able to catch a few shows on the FN channel when I was at my parent's home in St. Martin. They have a USA cable feed along with French and Dutch channels.

I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing. How did The Pioneer Woman get a TV show? Drummond could be the nicest person on the planet, but she is not a cook, chef, or very interesting on camera. She speaks in this weird monotone and comes across very smug. Don't get me started on the food.

I think the title of her show is misleading. When I hear Pioneer Woman, I see a tough life on the ranch, not someone who is married to a multi-millionaire from one of the wealthiest cattle ranching families in the state.

Speaking of the Food Network, what is up with Guy and him still wearing sunglasses on the back of his head?

Other random observations:

Hands down Ina, Giada, and the Neelys are my FN favorites. They are excellent cooks, the food is presented well, and they make things I would actually want to cook and eat.

I LOVE Ina's kitchen. She had a barn on her property converted into a kitchen. It's lovely.

Rachael Ray seems less perky. What happened? Her food continues to look unappetizing. Not a fan.

Paula Dean - why does she continue to shill for Smithfield foods? Their horrific farming and labor practices have been brought to her attention.

Sandra Lee - I can't even.

I liked Bobby Flay's show back in the day. Is it still on? Remember that killer outdoor deck/grill he had in the City?

Do you have a favorite?

Yes...and the winners are: INA, GIADA, PAT and GINA!...Giada has a spicy wing drummet recipe to die for!...I love Ina's New England style of cooking! and of course the southern cooking style of the Neelys! Bobby Flay is the best on American Cuisine Chef...Rac, San!don't cut the mustard! Paula is a bit of a tricky one. Too much unhealthy cooking! but give her some greens w/ham hocks in it? okay...I love that part..... V

That is so funny! I love Ree Drummond's blog. It is so down home, draw you in visually appealing. I haven't seen her show. I don't watch a lot of tv. I like Ace of Cakes.

I never got the Pioneer Woman thing either, at least the blog. My favorite all time is Jamie. Love to watch him, love to listen to him and almost always want to cook what he is making.

Rachel really does seem down these days. She barely smiles like she used to on her shows. She seems BORED, which is pretty much how i always felt about her. Don't know what's going on there, but if you look at her beginning shows to where she is now, it's night and day.

Love Giada at home. Nice freakin house! But Ina's kitchen, barn, backyard win the day for me.

Pat and Gina can be annoying, but their food is flavorful and at least their show is entertaining.

I hate Guy, but I love shows about local diners, so I watch DDD. His cooking show is for the birds.

Bobby has like a million different shows.

I like Chuck on the cooking channel, mostly because he's hot.

Simone Rugiati on Gambero Rosso is great, good looking and funny.
I also have a soft spot for both Nigella and Jamie.
And I know none of the people you mentioned other than by their names, never saw their shows (maybe Rachl Ray once?).

I like David Rocco! Who is INA?

A friend bought me the Pioneer Woman cooking book. I am not much of a cook, but for the life of me, I could not find one single recipe that seemed appealing. Ok, I 'm french, maybe that's why :-)

V - I have never bought any of Paula's book (too much fattening) but I used to like her show.

Anon - Her blog does has nice photos, but I find the "down home" POV very fake. Down home and crazy loaded don't mix in my opinion. Someone can be very wealthy and down to earth. Down home is a very specific vibe/esthetic.

Elizabeth - Love Jamie too. He has a few shows that air in Italy. His enthusiasm is fantastic.

Gibber - maybe RR has too much going on. You nailed it. She seems so bored last weekend.

Gina and Pat can be a bit much, but for southern style cooking they're great. It's nice to see a couple cook together too.

I want Giada's kitchen.

I haven't seen the Cooking Channel. Not sure if Mom and Dad get it. DDD is a good show. I did watch it despite not being a Guy fan.

Paolo - on Gambero Rosso Nigella and Jamie are my favorites. I'm starting to watch more of the Italian chefs now that my Italian is better. There is one cooking show with kids that is great.

lucia - I "discovered" David Rocco when I was in Toronto for a movie. He does air here on one of the Travel Channels. I'm a big fan. I hope they show his latest series. I think it was shot on the Amalfi coast? Ina Garten is the host of the show Barefoot Contessa. I have all her cookbooks. She used to be a energy policy analyst in DC before moving to the Hamptons (way back before it became THE Hamptons) and opened a very popular food shop called the Barefoot Contessa.

Perline - I was raised in America and I can't find anything appealing about her recipes either!

I like 'I menu di Benedetta' with Benedetta Parodi, although I don't understand everything she says. I can't get many of the ingredients either (mainly for the desserts),but it is very real...especially when she drops things on the floor (and cusses) or talks about past cooking errors. I know she wrote several cookbooks and is a professional but somehow that makes her seem more real.

I'm a "INA" girl, all the way. Her recipes have been easy to follow, her show is great and I love how she talks about her "Jeffrey", with a sparkle in her eyes. Her kitchen is my "fantasy" kitchen.

j. doe - I haven't see her show. Will be on the look out for it.

deborah - I agree. The way she talks about him is so sweet.

Of all the shows on Food Network, Ina does it for me with her simple recipes, casual style and beautiful setting there in the Hamptons. But I am also loving Debbie Mazur and her husband in their enchanting "Extra Virgin" on the cooking channel.

I follow PW and didn't know she had a show! So I had to watch it.

I agree that she does not make for good TV. I like her blog and recipes are simple, not intimidating for the non foodies out there. Hi! But man, is her voice annoying. And she's messy. Wipe off your hands woman! Her sleeves kept getting in the food. Is it petty to be annoyed by her eyeliner too? In my head, she is stylish, chic, a little but country, a little bit Anthropologie.

I will pretend I never saw this and go back to idealizing her life/style/blog/pics.

Giada/big head is ok. Do like her recipes and she's good at her show, but she still bugs.

CCL - I following Extra Virgin on Twitter. I wish I could see their show. I wish I could go to Ina's for brunch one day. ha

TG - In person Giada's head doesn't appear so big. Do you notice how most movie/TV stars have larger heads?

Being on camera is not easy, but PW does have the money for media training. I wonder what the ratings are like for her show. I assume very high.

I didn't even notice her eyeliner. I was too busy tripping out over her food and technique.

Not a fan of Pioneer Woman at all. I can't remember how I discovered her but all of a sudden, her blog just BLEW UP and she was everywhere.

There are a lot of anti-Pioneer Woman people and blogs. A friend of mine is convinced she just bought her fame. She has a professional website done (have you seen how much her website designer costs??), she had PR, I've read she "scrubs" any and all negative comments about her or her blog.

People say if you don't like her, you're jealous. I'm not jealous, I just don't get it. I do like her food photography and some of her other photography - it's crisp and pretty to look at - but I'm don't really get the overall appeal and the sychophants. And I only saw one episode of her FN show. It was enough. I find her annoying to look at and listen to.

As for my FN favorite chefs: Giada (despite her big head and ever-present cleavage), Ina Garten (despite how "Jeffrey is just going to love this...it'll remind him of that time we vacationed in ______"), Nigella Lawson and Tyler Florence. And I love watching "Chopped". It's educational and suspenseful with that time limit. LOL

I LOVE David Rocco's Dolce Vita on the Cooking Channel, and his cookbook "Made In Italy" is beautiful. Also on the Cooking Channel, I love "Extra Virgin" with Debi Mazar and her husband Gabriele, and "Bitchin' Kitchen" with Nadia G.

On CreateTV, offered by different public television stations, I love “Lidia’s Italy” with Lidia Bastianich (or anything else with her), “Cook’s Country from America’s Test Kitchen”, and anything with Jacques Pépin.

I have a bazillion channels on my satellite TV and I watch a lot of cooking shows. LOL And since I travel all over the country (USA), I often pick up the local CreateTV channel on different public television networks. Now if I can only get off my ass and make all of the dishes I fall in love with!!

TDR - I really like Chopped too. It started airing after I left the States so I only get to see it when I'm at my parents.

I wish more of The Cooking Channel shows were available internationally. "Extra Virgin" would do well here I think.

"Lidia's Italy" was another favorite of mine. I need to get one of her and David Rocco's cookbooks.

I shouldn't be amazed by the success of shows like PN or Semi-Homemade, yet I am!

I have to agree: I never could understand why. P.W. has a cooking show, especially when I first started reading her blog years ago, it was all about photography. I like the diner cook show, but am also tired of the dude with the glasses on the back of his head; LOVE the Neeleys (even though her voice drives me insane), no on P. Dean, but I like Ace of Cakes just to see the many creations

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

Tracey - Ace of Cakes might air over here. I think I caught the tail end of one episode.

I guess Guy's thing is to wear sunglasses on the back of his head. I can't remember if he wore them during The Next Food Network Star.

They say Sandra Lee doesn't cook, she "assembles" :)

I am sure Rachel Ray is a perfectly nice person but her recipes don't seem at all appetizing...I definitely would love to have Ina's kitchen and her herd of good looking friends who apparently seem to have ample leisure time!

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

idara - That is so true about Sandra!

I crack up when Ina has her friends over. Everything is so lovely... the food, the decor, her friends.

I love Lee Drummond/Pioneer Woman on the Food Network! I enjoy her cooking and seeing her kids & of course, her husband! They are teaching their children how to work on the ranch, that is a good thing! The youngest boy is so cute and it makes me happy to watch him! I make a point every Saturday morning to sit down & watch her on Food Network!

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

nanny - Her family seems lovely.

But I when I watch a cooking show on a channel called the Food Network, the food better be on point and the cook/chef should be engaging. It's difficult to be on camera. PW is not a natural.

Food Network lost it when they let Emeril leave.

nyc/caribbean ragazza said...

Most of the chefs from that era are gone. It's a shame. The network should change it's name. It's not really about Food anymore.
